Given the hurricane season of 2024, which according to specialists is estimated to be more active than other years, the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres (AHCPM&IM) announced that it has begun reviewing shelters and protocols, to provide greater security to visitors, including the State Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur) will launch a new protocol that the entire industry must follow.

There are currently around 15 hotels certified as refuges, which can house tourists in category 3 hurricanes, since from level 4 the evacuation of the Cancun Hotel Zone is considered. In addition, the Center of Cancun Conventions is also enabled as a refuge. It should be noted that, in the event of a hydrometeorological phenomenon, Sedetur activates the “Guest Locator” platform, which allows you to identify, locate, and know the situation of travelers who are in the destination and has the support of hotels, consulates, and the municipal tourism directorates.
