Cultural journalism is key to the dissemination of new projects

Within the 4th State Theater Congress in Yucatán, journalists Andrea Segura, Itzel Chan, and Ricardo Pat agreed that cultural journalism must make artistic projects known and visible in a way that attracts new audiences.

Andrea Segura commented that, without cultural journalism, people would not receive information about new artistic projects, which marks the difference with conventional journalism, while Ricardo Pat stated that culture opens the door to exploiting journalistic genres that are not widely used in everyday life such as chronicle.

“Cultural journalism has the same structure as other journalism genres, the advantage is the background, its reach, and penetration (in the audience),” he said, who emphasized that, without passion, this type of journalism cannot be developed with what is necessary, coupled with the fact that it contributes to supporting the local scene that often does not have reflectors.

For Itzel Chan, cultural journalism and new artistic projects are needed, since “without cultural journalism, these projects would not exist without and I feel that these creations need journalism to make themselves known,” although she considered that the journalist should have a responsibility in what he/she expresses through video or in the writing.

Regarding the current panorama of cultural journalism, Pat commented that as long as values exist, a reactive effect and greater coverage can continue to be generated, something that has come hand in hand with technological advances, while, for Andrea and Itzel, more preparation is needed on the part of the journalist.

“More preparation is needed, how to handle the information, how to approach cultural journalism so as not to replicate other colleagues’ notes,” said the journalist, while her counterpart pointed out that the newsrooms should give greater priority to this section since much of what that is covered is for the personal interest of the journalist or the communication company.
