The police crisis in Campeche worsened when unemployed security agents confronted ministerial agents.
The police crisis that Campeche is experiencing got even worse on Tuesday, May 21st when unemployed security agents confronted ministerial agents who work under the direct orders of the head of the SPSC, Marcela Muñoz Martínez, of whom they are asking for her dismissal.
Marcela Muñoz Martínez has held the title of Secretary of Public Security since the beginning of the Layda Sansores government in September 2021. When she appointed her to the position, Sansores stated that under her command Campeche would have the best police corporation, with higher salaries, more attention to the citizens’ problems, and better equipment.
The result of the riot was that five members of the Mujeres Valientes group were injured and the undersecretary of Internal Affairs of the SPSC of Campeche, Víctor Hugo Sánchez, was accused of being one of the aggressors.
The incident occurred when about 100 agents of the Secretariat of Citizen Protection and Security (SPSC) went to the alternate headquarters of the institution in the state capital to demand delayed payment of salaries, which according to the complainants amounts to more than two months.
According to the protesters, they already had an agreement to talk with authorities, but suddenly 150 agents loyal to Muñoz Martínez appeared to try to stop the protest and take away the buses where the dissatisfied agents were transported.
The state’s prosecutor, Renato Sales, arrived at the scene and tried to lead the dialogue with Deputy José Luis Flores.
The prosecutor tried to greet the legislator, but he refused and demanded Sales not send armed agents to break up the protest. Given the refusal, the prosecutor refused to remain at the scene.
50 police officers loyal to Marcela Muñoz Martínez tried to take the transport units from the dissatisfied police officers, which is why the riot began.
