The first four months of the year “have been very terrible in Yucatán”, since every day it is estimated that there are around 60 cases of animal abuse and cruelty, ranging from abandonment to poisoning or mutilation.
The above proves that animal cruelty is increasing in Yucatán, since in previous years 20 cases were recorded per day, warns Elsa Arceo, independent activist and rescuer.
She announced that this Saturday, May 4, at 5 p.m., independent rescuers, activists, and society will hold a peaceful demonstration at the Monumento a la Patria, in Mérida, to make this problem visible and remember that the new “Rufo Law” exists for protection to the fauna that includes domestic and street pets, which must be enforced, and remember that it contemplates a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Elsa Arceo confesses herself as angry and shocked by all the cases of animal cruelty that have happened in Yucatán.
“This is worse than ever. Before the red lights were in Kanasín and Tekax and today it has spread to other towns such as Motul, Tizimín, Chicxulub Pueblo, Chumayel, and Progreso, among others,” he explained.
He considers that the situation is no longer sustainable, because even with the new law – which has some points that are not very clear – both aggressors and activists notice that nothing is happening, so the latter urge the authorities, as well as candidates, to become aware of animal welfare.
“We are very worried and concerned that the law is not applied as it should be and that there is already a new “Rufo” law, we see that nothing is happening. I think this has been the worst year and we are still in the fourth month.”
She insisted that the cases reported in the Prosecutor’s Office do not reflect reality, since they, as an activist group, receive complaints that do not reach the authorities, due to the extensive process of accompaniment to the victims.Considera que todos estos casos de maltrato animal serían un reflejo de problemas de salud mental de los agresores, por lo que hizo un llamado a brindar atención psicológica estas personas.
“Una persona que hace el daño a un animal, es el debut de un criminal”, aseguró. “Primero atacan a un ser sintiente y después atacan a un niño, una niña, una mujer un adulto mayor incluso esto está tipificado en el argot del maltrato y crueldad animal”.
She considers that all these cases of animal abuse would be a reflection of the mental health problems of the aggressors, which is why he called for psychological care to be provided to these people.
“A person who harms an animal is the debut of a criminal,” he said. “First they attack a sentient being and then they attack a boy, a girl, a woman, or an older adult. This is even typified in the slang of animal abuse and cruelty.”
Although she does not want to politicize this cause, the activist clarified that they want to listen to the candidates for public positions, to know their positions regarding animal abuse.
