In Santa Rita Cholul, Mérida municipality, there is a very peculiar cultural space called Museo Lara, which is little known but has an interesting history.
The owner of this museum is the retired professor Víctor Manuel Lara Durán, originally from Tixkokob, who in 1978 acquired the land on which the museum is located, during the administration of the then governor Francisco Luna Kan. .
Lara Durán came on Saturdays and Sundays to clear the land and built this cultural center little by little, while in his house he kept things that he collected, or bought, until in 2011 he founded the museum.
What’s in the Museum?
The first room to visit is the temporary exhibitions of the bullfighting group Tendido Tapia, where photos, posters and countless souvenirs from the bullfight are displayed, including a photo of Cantinflas in the Mérida Bullring.
Room two is dedicated to sacred art. While room three, called ‘Juan Manuel Chan Alvarado’, in honor of a deceased Yucatecan painter, is the art gallery, where temporary exhibitions are presented.
Room four exhibits objects such as the shells of Chocolate Soldier bottles from different periods, of Sidra Pino from 1857 when he sold mineral water, and the white bottles of the Cervecería Yucateca.
Room five is dedicated to Mayan culture and the Caste War.
In general, the museum has more than 200 different bottles and more than 500 glasses of almost all Mexican and foreign beers.
The space offers Trova Music nights, gatherings with friends who like art in all its manifestations, various exhibitions, conferences, talks and there is even a small bar with a very Mexican name: La Chingada.
The Lara Museum is located on 6th street number 319, between 13 and 11 of Santa Rita Cholul, Mérida.
