More than 13 thousand new restaurants were opened in Yucatán during 2023 (CANIRAC)

The restaurant sector in Yucatán grew by more than 13 thousand establishments during 2023: from just over 3,000 to 16,636 at the end of the year, almost 50 percent of these in Mérida. A new food business opened every 41 minutes during the last year, on average.

When protesting for a new period at the head of the group, the president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Foods Industry (Canirac), Yucatán delegation, Claudia Yamily González Góngora, highlighted the encouraging figures from last year, and specified that 96 percent of these businesses are micro, and 60 percent of the workforce are women.

“Thousands of new businesses are opening in Yucatán. This has caused the industry to grow and more jobs to be generated,” she indicated.

González Góngora thanked the members of the Chamber for the vote of confidence in the work her team carried out during the administration that has just concluded.

She stated that she is renewing her commitment to the more than 300 members, and recalled the importance and impact that the restaurant industry has on the economic and social development of Yucatan.

“Food establishment are promoters of gastronomy, job generators and a vital source of opportunities for young people seeking professional development” she continued.

Ignacio Alarcón Rodríguez Pacheco, National President of Canirac, reported that approaches are already being managed with the candidates for governor and municipal president of Mérida so that they can discuss the needs of the sector, resulting in public policies and coordinated work to boost the Food & Drink industry in the region.
