Mexican Navy seizes almost 300 kilograms of grouper in Progreso

As part of a new surprise operation in Progreso, the Secretary of the Navy seized a notable amount of grouper in this port.

The Secretary of the Navy, through the Thirteenth Naval Zone, once again carried out a maritime operation in Progreso; to inspect out-of-regulation vessels. Within the actions, there was a retention of almost 300 kilos of “red” and “black” type grouper.

The Mexican Navy reported that this action was carried out in coordination with personnel from the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca), which belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It stands out that it is not the first “surprise operation” registered in April of this year.

The precautionary detention on this occasion was with the smaller vessel named “Gabriel”, which was intercepted in the middle of a night tour to verify proper documentation and to maintain order in the sea of the peninsula.

The boat was inspected by the membersof the Navy, who found approximately 222 kilograms of “Negrillo” type fish and 72 kilograms of red snapper of different sizes.

It was noted that in this maritime surveillance tour – in which SEMAR personnel and federal officials from Conapesca were on board a vessel from the Thirteenth Naval Zone – it was striking that the fishing boat had the lights off and only one crew member onboard.

As part of the protocols, the vessel was escorted to the dock of the Yucalpetén Harbor Master’s Office. On-site, the boat captain was asked for all the corresponding documentation to demonstrate the legal origin of the product.
