State police firefighters worked at the Mérida garbage dump, on the Susulá-Chalmuch highway, which began to catch fire early this Saturday, March 6.
A column of smoke coming out of the open-air dump area has once again put nearby communities on alert since just over a year ago, in February 2023, dozens of families from that community were evacuated due to a toxic cloud that remained in the area for several days due to a similar fire.
On this occasion, the fire started in the early morning hours and although several firefighting units and personnel from the Mérida City Council worked at the scene and sent pipes, the fire was hard to control because the fire advanced very quickly between the garbage consumed.
The area, once again, has been affected by smoke, but so far the evacuation of residents of nearby communities was not necessary. The place remains closed and the collection trucks were sent to the Kanasín dumpsite until the fire is controlled or put out.
