Mérida City Council works to consolidate the “White City” as a gateway to world tourism

Gastronomy stands out as one of the main axes in the tourism promotion of Mérida at a national and global level, recognized by the Michelin Guide, as stated by Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro on the last day of activities at the Tianguis Turístico de Mexico 2024.

The Municipal President reported that in collaboration with the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) and its Yucatan delegation, the state capital will position local gastronomic establishments as part of the renowned Michelin Guide.

He explained within the framework of the Mexican Tourist Tianguis in Acapulco that the City Council of Mérida and CANIRAC agreed to work in coordination so that the “White City” is once again in the eyes of the world through this initiative that will give continuity to the entire promotion gastronomic strategy that has been implemented.

The Yucatecan capital has also hosted important international events such as the Best Chefs Award and the 50 Best Restaurants, the latter representing an opportunity for establishments that have been included in the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America to have the possibility of obtaining these Michelin distinctions.

Ruz Castro specified that to propose Mérida as part of the Michelin Guide, which recognizes the best gastronomic experiences in the world by inviting tourists to travel to discover them, a diagnosis, evaluation, and assessment will be carried out and subsequently, a selection of restaurants that could be proposed to enter this prestigious International Guide.

He mentioned that this guide not only rewards restaurants and hotels but also grants the “Michelin Green” recognition to establishments with sustainable gastronomy projects.

During the 2024 Tourist Tianguis, the National CANIRAC promoted the Tourist and Gastronomic Corridor on 47th Street in Mérida as a successful model so that other cities can replicate it and use it as a tourism attraction product through gastronomy.

“The Mérida Tourist and Gastronomic Corridor is not only a pioneer at the national level, but also an example of the results that can be obtained by working in coordination with the government and businessmen in the restaurant industry to put the name of Mérida in the eyes of the world,” concluded the mayor.
