In this regard, the head of the Progreso Ecological Police, Obdulio Mena Sánchez, said that this practice is increasingly common among tourists, mainly locals, who for fun or having a pleasant time put themselves in serious danger due to the depth of the waters and the constant change of the waves.
He stated that the elements of this corporation in charge of taking care of the seawalls and nearby areas, report that during the days of tourist presence in the port, mainly on holidays and weekends, walkers tend to jump into the sea from the tip of the docks. , which are restricted areas.
When detected, they are invited to avoid those actions that put their physical integrity at risk, but they ignore the recommendations or withdraw momentarily and then return to carrying out the same behaviors.
In this type of situation, various cases of deaths have been recorded, both at the docks of the ports of Chicxulub, Chuburná, and at the Chocolate de Progreso dock. According to local paramedics, these deaths could have been avoided with prevention and following the recommendations of the authorities, which aim to guarantee their safety.
