The prolonged drought that has hit the muncipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo since January has put the ranchers of the Mayan community of Chan Santa Cruz at risk with more than 600 head of cattle adrift.
Don Fernando Yam Tzuc, a rancher from Felipe Carrillo Puerto, pointed out that he does not belong to any livestock group and has been doing his work privately, but like everyone else, he is concerned about the lack of rain that has caused problems such as dry pastures, depriving animals of their main food source.
He explained that given the environmental crisis that the drought represents, the livestock producers of this community have gone to the offices of the local Livestock Union to follow up on the requests submitted to the government authorities.
He maintained that it is urgent because the cattle need supplements such as chicken manure, bales, and molasses and they cannot wait for the government to wait or for the elections to pass, because the situation is critical right now, their cows are skinny and they could die.
Don Fernando asserted that the requests from the ranchers of Chan Santa Cruz, and other towns, have been delivered to government institutions such as the Secretariat of Development, Agriculture, Rural and Fisheries (Sedarpe), but time has passed by, and they have not received any response whatsoever.
