The 11th Edition of the Seed Festival began with a blessing ceremony with dozens of farmers and beekeepers from 11 communities in the southeast of the municipality of Peto who established themselves in the Mejorada Park to offer more than 59 species of food, including corn, honey, pumpkin, egg, among others.
The producers were presented at this exhibition that was organized by the Bachelor’s Degree in Agroecology of the Campus of Biological and Agricultural Sciences (CCBA) of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY).
During the inauguration, the director of the CCBA Graduate and Research Unit, Carlos Sandoval Castro, recognized the work carried out by teachers and students to organize this type of activity that allows citizens to learn about the products that are produced in the Yucatecan countryside.
“It is a success that this event is organized in the center of Mérida because it brings the students closer to the producers so that they can learn about and rescue the seeds and all the knowledge that exists in the communities, that contact that the degree in agroecology fosters with the producers and students,” he highlighted.
When speaking, the research professor of the degree, Jorge Cetz Iuit, recalled that this space held within the framework of the Agroecology Conference 2024, in addition to allowing the people of Merida to consume this type of organic food, is also a business window with private initiative.
He added that in previous editions it has been possible for farmer families to link up with small and medium-sized companies that buy their products to be able to distribute them in the Yucatecan capital or other areas.
In his turn, the director of Economic Development and Tourism of the Mérida City Council, José Luis Martínez Semerena, thanked the UADY for its collaboration in being able to promote what was done in Yucatán.
“We have worked to raise awareness in society and give the value it deserves to the work carried out by producers, who work every day so that we have better nutrition; We thank you for that effort, and we are sure that we will soon achieve fair trade,” he said.
