Explosion on yacht leaves eight injured in Progreso, Yucatán

The vessel was loading fuel at the sheltered port of Yucalpetén when the accident occurred.

The recreational boat “Alaya”, with registration number FL8561NV and 28 feet in length, registered an explosion, due to an alleged short circuit while loading fuel at the gas station at the exit to the sea from the sheltered port of Yucalpetén, leaving as a balance 8 people injured.

The incident occurred around noon on Sunday, April 21st, when a boat was loading fuel to go out for a ride off the coast of Progreso, with 8 people on board, including the personnel who operated it, including 3 children.

Unfortunately, an alleged short circuit in the boat would have generated an explosion, which led to an emergency operation by the local port authorities.

According to those present, when finishing loading fuel, the boat tried to start the engines and, at that moment, the explosion occurred, leaving at least 9 people with burns.

The injured were treated by paramedical personnel from the Red Cross and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), who quickly assessed and transferred them to the hospital for medical attention. The severity of their injuries is unknown.
