The three levels of government are coordinating to control two large forest fires located in the Kancab-Kantemó and Nohalal areas, as well as establishing the appropriate strategies to mitigate the fire.
The so-called Technical Operational Group, GTO, of the State Council for the Prevention and Fighting of Fires of the State of Yucatán met at the Municipal Palace of Tekax to establish strategies to combat these.
The fire located in the Kancab-Kantemó section, which affects the Puuc State Biocultural Reserve, has been controlled through brigades from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), state Civil Protection, and municipal government since the beginning. Although more hot spots have been detected in the region, the Directorate of Accidents and Rescues of the Ministry of Public Security decided to carry out assessment overflights with the helicopter to determine the extent of the damage to the vegetation, which so far has a perimeter of thirteen kilometers, so elements from the Secretariat of National Defense, SEDENA, and the National Guard have joined in the fight.
The second fire located in Nohalal, also assessed with overflights of the SSP helicopter, affects the Bala’an K’aax Flora and Fauna Protection Area and has also been attended to by brigades from the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development PROCODES of the National Commission of Protected Areas, as well as Conafor brigades.
To continue the fight on both fronts, Conafor will request the use of aerial equipment with heli buckets to discharge water since they are areas that are difficult to access by land, with rugged topography that presents varied vegetation.
The mayor of Tekax, Ms. Flora Margarita Peraza Campos, has provided sufficient supplies for the brigade members of the different units that continue fighting on the ground, to facilitate their work.
Enrique Alcocer Basto, head of Procivy, made a careful call to the population to clean the yards, not burn garbage or light bonfires that could constitute a danger of a major incident.
He also urged drivers not to throw cigarette butts on the side of the road or glass bottles that could ignite grasslands due to the magnifying glass effect, in addition to reporting any fire-related incident to 911.
As well as a call to producers to respect the burning calendar and take all precautions when carrying out this activity, Alcocer Basto pointed out. Also present at the meeting were Eng. José Manuel Bolio García, Director of Agriculture of the Ministry of Rural Development, Commander Santiago Massa Ramos, Director of Accidents and Rescue of the SSP, Eng. Carlos González Barrios, Head of the Promoter of Forestry Development of Conafor, Jorge Ariel Luna García representative of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, among others.
