The pollution generated by livestock farming is an issue that worries many people in Yucatan and with a plant that produces biomethane, derived from organic waste from livestock farming and agriculture, not only is the problem of emissions and contamination of the water table solved. , but also gives the possibility of having clean energy available, says the vice president of Government Affairs and Sustainability of Engie, Ana Laura Ludlow Echeverría.

The executive revealed that a pilot project is being prepared in Yucatán and that it will be extended to the states of Campeche, Puebla, Querétaro, and Jalisco, where they will install large plants and biodigesters that would be connected to their network of natural gas transportation pipelines.

The interviewee stated that they want Yucatán to be the first state in the country where a biodigester plant is built and biogas is produced with livestock waste.

“Yes, it is around 20 million dollars, but we are convinced of the benefits of this project and we know that we have to start the market so it can happen on its own,” he responded.

“In France, seven years ago there were only 40 sites where biomethane was injected, today there are more than 500. This means that once the market begins to provide, the conditions are met and it becomes an interesting project for the same groups to livestock and agriculture can develop them on their own.”

In addition, he specified that the production of biomethane through livestock and agricultural waste is a pilot test, which is why Engie México works on many details and in close coordination with the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) and the Ministry of Energy. , who are promoting this type of renewable and green energy projects.

At this time, the CRE is developing all the regulations that are needed to achieve this production of green natural gas in Mexico. For this reason, Engie will build these plants to serve as a pilot test and adjustments to the regulation will be made based on their operation.

“It is a bit of the role that we are going to play as a pilot test, but then we hope that many players and participants in the energy sector will be in this renewable green gas production project,” he stated. “The truth is that Yucatán is an example of the maximum potential that this type of innovative project could have, we are interested in accelerating it to have results very soon.”
