As part of the celebration of Rotary Day in Yucatán, Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro has reaffirmed the City Council’s dedication to work towards building a stronger Mérida and a more equitable Yucatán for children and vulnerable groups, with a focus on gender and social inclusion.

In the ceremony held in the Portrait Hall of the “Olimpo” Cultural Center, Ruz Castro pointed out that if something distinguishes the people of Yucatán and particularly those of Mérida, it is having a participatory society that promotes the social responsibility of its citizens.
“And that same vision places us on the path of a Rotary movement that is a service to others, recognizing it on the path of a state and city moving towards more humane and inclusive conditions,” stated.
He added that the collaborative alliance between the municipality and the members of the different Rotary clubs benefits citizens through work aimed at the common good and assistance to the community.
In this regard, the mayor recalled that in July 2020 the City Council joined the Rotary Club project called “Green Duel”, in which 2,000 trees were planted in memory of those who died from COVID-19 in Yucatán.
In that sense, the representative of the Governor of District 4195, María Teresa Castro Cordero, thanked the Mayor for the work he does in favor of the city and that visitors notice during their stay in Mérida.
The president of the Rotary Club Mérida Itzáes 2023-2024, Celia Rivas Rodríguez, also thanked the Mayor for his support of Rotary work and for sharing the vision of working for vulnerable groups.
In addition, Rivas Rodríguez placed the Rotary Pin on the Mayor as an honorary member of the Mérida Itzáes Rotary Club. At the ceremony, Jorge Luis Canché Escamilla was also awarded the recognition as the oldest member of the Rotary Club of Mérida Itzáes.
It is worth mentioning that Rotary, which has more than 1.2 million members worldwide, focuses mainly on community service projects in areas such as health, education, the fight against poverty, and the promotion of peace.
The Mérida Itzáes Rotary Club is the largest in district 4195. It covers the entire south of the country and includes Veracruz, Campeche, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Chiapas.
