For one hour, the lights of the Government Palace remained off, an action with which Yucatán joined the global movement called Earth Hour, an environmental campaign promoted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that is celebrated every year at the end of March.
Since our beginnings in 2007, Earth Hour has been known for the “lights off” moment, with individuals from around the globe switching off their lights to show symbolic support for the planet and to raise awareness of the environmental issues affecting it.
The main objective of this activity is to raise awareness to fight global warming and climate change, issues in which Yucatán Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal promotes concrete actions within the Yucatán Zero Waste strategy.
It should be noted that this year more than 190 countries have joined this initiative, so global landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, India Gate, Beijing’s Phoenix Center in China, the Brandenburg Gate in Germany, the Colosseum in Italy, the Empire State Building in the United States and Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, to name a few, turned off their lights to show their support for the campaign.
