The International Boardwalk of Progreso suffered substantial damage to its facilities, due to the strong winds and storm surge caused by the entry of cold Front No. 32, in February, and today it has more than 50 percent progress in its rehabilitation, as reported by the interim mayor of Progreso, Roger Antonio Gómez Ortegón, after supervision.

After the onset of this phenomenon, the International Boardwalk had to be temporarily closed, as some areas were flooded and that, in addition to making access to pedestrians and vehicles impossible, represented a risk for locals and visitors. Therefore, the Municipal and Ecological Police limited the place to prevent accidents.

In the following weeks, the councilor explained, staff from Public Services, as well as Civil Protection, worked together to attend to each affected sector, re-enabling the area in front of the CTM, the Chapel, the Pescadora Pier, the “Poseidon” soccer court, the basketball court, as well as the Skatepark and Viking Beach Gym.

However, work still needs to be completed in the area where the monumental letters of Progreso and other sectors are located, the mayor added.

Likewise, he clarified that during the power outage on the boardwalk, unfortunately, people stole light bulbs from the walkway, leaving exposed cables which are translates into a high risk of elctrocution.

In that sense, Gómez Ortegón reported that each space is being evaluated so that they can be opened one hundred percent.

The mayor thanked the people of Progreso and visitors for their patience, declared that the City Council continues to provide the corresponding maintenance to this place that is so popular with families, and announced that new sports infrastructure facilities will soon be added in the municipality.

“We continue working so that Progreseños have better facilities and installations to carry out physical activities that, without a doubt, will contribute to their physical and social well-being,” the mayor said.

Finally, the Municipal official, Karim Dib López, also attended this supervision; the head of Civil Protection, Aurelio Medina Pérez, as well as personnel from Public Services and the Ecological Police.
