Four Forest Nurseries installed in the Cuxtal Reserve are part of the actions undertaken for the environment and in the fight against climate change. These nurseries have achieved notable production: 500 thousand plants in 2022 and 275 thousand in 2023.
One million native species
The main purpose is to produce one million plants of different native species every two years. This not only contributes to the environment but also has a significant impact on Mérida’s main water source.
These nurseries are the result of a collaboration agreement between FONATUR, Tren Maya S.A. de C.V., the City Council, and the Cuxtal Reserve. This initiative seeks the biannual production of native plants, which represents a considerable effort in the conservation of local biodiversity.
The resources assigned to the project, which amount to 35 million pesos, are intended for the fitting out and production of the plants, as well as the technical-operational personnel and the necessary equipment.
«Adopt a tree»
The plants produced are distributed to a variety of projects and associations, as well as municipal programs such as “Adopt a Tree” and the “Forest Crusade”. The inclusion of operational personnel from local communities is also worth mentioning, with special attention to the participation of women in these efforts.
The importance of inter-institutional collaboration to promote sustainability and the municipality’s commitment to the protection of natural resources is of vital relevance for the conservation of the Cuxtal Ecological Reserve, which constitutes the main water collection area for Mérida and is home to a wide diversity of natural species.
The Cuxtal Ecological Reserve, with more than 11 thousand hectares of surface, turned 30 last year. Its importance as a natural reserve and as a provider of water for the city is unquestionable, and the work carried out in the forest nurseries contributes significantly to its conservation and the well-being of the local community.
