The Mérida City Council reported that due to the International Women’s Day this Friday, March 8, the Monumento a la Patria will be illuminated in a purple light, as a symbolic act of commitment to the fight for equal rights; but they also announced an operation to protect historic buildings.
“This symbolic action represents our commitment to the fight for gender equality and respect for women’s rights,” the authorities noted.
“At the City Council of Mérida, we always work with humanist policies that put people at the center of public life, which is why we understand the cause of women in the commemoration of March 8, decreed as International Women’s Day.”
The statement emphasized that the responsibility of the municipal authority is not only to ensure the well-being of everyone within the Municipality but also to maintain harmonious coexistence and have public policies that guarantee their rights.
To this end, in addition to illuminating the Monumento a la Patria in purple, the City Council, through the Municipal Police, will implement a special operation to guarantee the safety of all those attending the commemorative events.
On the other hand, the authorities have covered the walls and pilasters of the Government Palace, and the walls and cross of the Cathedral of San Ildefonso with boards.
It should be remembered that last year both buildings were vandalized with graffiti during the march.
Likewise, in the Plaza Grande the tourist letters of Mérida were removed, perhaps to prevent any damage or being burned as happened in the pro-abortion march of September 2022.
