Derailment of the Mayan Train, with a high cost

“It is not correct that for such a large project, with a super-million dollar investment and where thousands of people will travel, such as the Mayan Train, they do not hire qualified people, with experience and knowledge”, professional railway workers say.

Instead, they hire workers who have never worked in the railroad system, says a transportation professional, who asked that his name not be published in an interview.

In the old company that covered the Chiapas to Mérida route, 250 railroad workers were terminated with a severance and the Mayan Train rehired a few, he comments. The consequence of this measure is that the Mayan Train does not operate with qualified personnel nor does it have good supervision.

As we reported, last Monday a car derailed at the station in Tixkokob.

In the opinion of the railroad worker, this fall will have a high cost and a very detailed repair to restore safety to the rails.

To begin with, he says, workers must check if the track change needles were not hit and altered by the weight of the train and if the wheels have the appropriate measurements to travel on the change rails.

Also check in a minimum section of 10 meters from the incident if the rails did not lose distance from each other if there are no bent rails, cracked or broken sleepers, and if the screws or fasteners did not move, among other detailed tasks that you know perfectly well. professional railroad workers.

The interviewee flatly ruled out that before the derailment of the car engine, the rails were bent, that the sleepers were broken, or that the screws and fasteners were out of position or broken, and that this caused the train to fall.

All this damage was caused by the weight of the cars at the time of the incident.

He said the derailment would cost a lot of money to the Tren Maya company, which is managed by the Army.  This is because they rented a high-capacity crane to lift the derailed train, used personnel for the maneuvers, and had to replace the bent sections of the rail. cracked, broken, or beaten sleepers, and check the braking system of the entire train to ensure that it does not have any damage for future trips. The professional railroad workers of Yucatán, already liquidated or retired, do not lose hope that at some point the Tren Maya company will allow them to work on the new railroad and the experience and knowledge of these workers will not continue to be wasted.
