Police authorities from the three levels of government and the State Attorney General’s Office carried out 12 searches in the same number of homes on this island, on the evening of Monday, March 4th, resulting in 16 people arrested, in addition to weapons and drugs seized.
The action was marred by accusations of robbery against some agents in one of the searches, which led to a confrontation with stones and a uniformed officer being beaten. During the night, groups tried to burn several cars, and this morning a threatening message on social networks caused dozens of parents to take their children out of schools.
Ministerial Police agents, National Guard, State Police, Municipal Police, members of the Navy, and the Mexican Army participated in this multiple search, in an evident reaction to the increase in violence seen in Cozumel.
It is worth remembering that on Saturday, March 2, a man was executed with a shot to the head while he was eating in a restaurant in the company of his family. In response, municipal authorities anticipated that the police presence would be reinforced.
According to a statement from the State Attorney General’s Office, among the 16 arrested on March 4, there is one person considered a “priority target.”Several homes were left with security seals after authorities found drugs or firearms inside.
Meanwhile, groups of young people, possibly drug dealers, burned vehicles in the Centro and Maravilla neighborhoods, using incendiary devices. The cars only suffered minor damage.
