The request for a Canadian visa for all Mexicans who want to visit that country took travelers from the Yucatan Peninsula by surprise, who, given the impossibility of processing this consular document quickly, have had to cancel their visit to that country.
In this regard, Jorge Escalante Bolio, general director of the Amigo Yucatán travel agency, states that the visa request to enter Canada brought a series of complications and losses for travelers, who have now canceled not only flights but also stays, tours and other activities that they already had planned and paid for.
“The visa request to go to Canada is greatly affecting the situation because even the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) that was previously authorized by the Canadian government is being canceled,” he stated.
As reported, on February 29, Canada announced that Mexican citizens must apply for a visa to enter the country, a measure that arose amid an increase in asylum requests from Mexicans in that nation.
“The decision was taken abruptly, because it was communicated on February 29 and came into effect on the same day,” said the long-time tourism Yucatecan businessman.
“This requirement is greatly affecting travelers who were planning to travel to Canada, including those who already had an eTA authorization from the Canadian government. Canada is now automatically ignoring the eTAs.”
He reiterates that passengers who had planned their trip to Canada are beginning to cancel their trip to that country, while those who still want to travel find consular offices where no one responds or gives information.
“Our agency took the test to manage Canadian visas. You contact a consular office of that country that appears on the official website of the Canadian government and you automatically hear a recording that they are answering another call, so you spend all day on the phone and no one gives you an answer or guidance. The few people who had managed to contact the Canadian consular office have not been able to get an appointment to process the visa,” Escalante Bolio concluded.
