On Sunday, March 24, an older adult died in a cenote in Cheumán, a community part of Mérida. The 62-year-old man arrived with his family at the “Chen-Ha” cenote located on the Dzitya – Cheumán road.

The man sat on the shore to soak his feet and at one point he slipped but, since he did not know how to swim, he began to submerge until he ended up drowning.

The son of the man saw what was happening and went into the water to try to rescue him, but it was impossible.

Divers from the firefighters of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene and rescued the man’s body.

Relatives indicated that the now-deceased was not in a state of intoxication. The place was secured by the police from the Metropolitan sector, who took note of what happened. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was in charge of removing the body for the necessary procedures.
