Last month, Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal received the “Biodiversity and Nature” award, from the “2023 Sustainability Awards” of the Skål World Congress, which was awarded to the state.
Yucatán received the award for “Biodiversity and Nature” from the “2023 Sustainability Awards” of the Skål World Congress, for the tourism product “Camino del Mayab”, an event led by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal which is a testimony of the work and vision towards sustainable tourism that respects and preserves the natural and cultural beauty of the state.
As part of his activities at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), which takes place in the Spanish capital, the Governor met with the head of the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico (Sectur), Miguel Torruco Marqués, with whom he agreed to continue joining efforts to continue strengthening the arrival of more tourism to Yucatán, boosting the economy and better paying jobs for all Yucatecan families.
Also, within the framework of Fitur, he was promoting the teamwork that is being carried out in tourism with the Federal Government, through projects such as the Mayan Train, which brings great advantages and benefits to the state and the entire southeast of the country. , bringing more tourism and strengthening people’s opportunities.
Vila Dosal held a working meeting with the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Zurab Pololiskashvili, where they were able to talk about the joint actions that are being carried out to promote the entity internationally since tourism is a important driver of the economy and sources of employment for Yucatecans.
Vila Dosal led the delivery of the “Biodiversity and Beauty” distinction, which recognizes the entity as a sustainable destination due to its attractiveness. promoted by the Ecoguerreros collective, being the first time that the entity has received this international award.
This recognition sets a precedent for service providers, tour operators, and the entire Yucatan tourism industry, since, during the current state administration, the private initiative and the government have worked together.
The award is the result of the team effort between the state government and the Ecoguerreros collective, who with great effort and enthusiasm have been working on this sustainable project during the current administration.
“Camino del Mayab” is the first major tour in Mexico, covering 130 kilometers in the tourist region “Cenotes and Haciendas de Yucatán” in a journey through time, from contemporary Mérida to the pre-Hispanic Mayans of Mayapán, allowing visitors to taste the local cuisine, spend the night in Mayan villages or tourist haciendas, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
This trail is a traversable network of beautiful and ancient roads that were originally train tracks and are now trails that protect invaluable historical and cultural value, connecting not only cenotes, haciendas, and ecological reserves, but also Mayan communities, creating a network of local efforts.
This initiative is part of the decentralization and diversification policy that has been promoted since the beginning of the present administration and through this type of product allows the preservation of culture and nature to be praised, in addition to allowing the socioeconomic development of the Mayan communities.
It is worth remembering that Skål International’s Sustainable Tourism Awards program aims to give visibility and grant recognition to entities in the tourism industry, through the eight categories that participate and where the Yucatecan product was the winner and pride for Yucatán and all of Mexico.
During the 21 years that this award has been held, Mexico has obtained an award on 7 occasions, the first time that Yucatán obtained this international award in 2023.
The Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards are held annually for all public and private sector companies, educational institutions, NGOs, and government bodies related to tourism around the world.
Yucatán was designated with this award last November within the framework of the 82nd Skål World Congress held in Malaga, Spain, which brings together more than 100 associated countries.
