Search at sea for Celestún fishermen suspended, families say goodbye

Heartbreaking moments were experienced by several families from Celestún when they received the news that, after 11 days of searching, the work of the possible rescue of three fishermen lost on the high seas was suspended. Thus the hope of finding their bodies or remains disappeared.

As we previously reported, last Sunday the 4th the three coastal residents had to return to the port, but cold front number 31 entered the Yucatecan coast with gusts of wind of 70 and up to 80 kilometers per hour and strong seas, which could have contributed to their shipwreck.

For 11 days, the families of the fishermen pleaded for the search by the Mexican Navy, Naval Zone, as well as other fellow fishermen, to be successful.

However, there were no traces or signs of the three fishermen who went out in search of their daily sustenance.

According to agents of the Mexican Navy, the search was extensive both by sea and by land, but the weather conditions meant that the operation had to be stopped for hours.

After 11 days it was determined that it would be difficult to find them alive or their bodies and it was decided to cancel the search. Amid tears and sadness, the wives and parents of the three Yucatecan fishermen received the news that their search was officially suspended.
