Inhabitants of Homún won a battle when it was determined, after seven years of struggle, that the authorities made omissions and violated rights when authorizing the Environmental Impact Statement of the mega pig farm in that municipality.

For this reason, representatives of that population and civil organizations went with blankets, banners, and batucada to the state Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) to ask that it not make use of its right to go to the next instance, to challenge and continue this legal lawsuit.

Ana Paola Galue Ruz, general legal director of this secretariat, attended to representatives of this Homún struggle, to whom she offered to abide by the judge’s orders.

Later, he declared that they would not exactly close the farm, but as part of compliance, they would revoke the permit granted to it and begin the process for its operation.

Cristina Muñoz Menéndez, one of the leaders of the Indignación group, said that last week the Second District Judge agreed with them by declaring that “various inconsistencies of an omissive nature were incurred.”

But, he added, the SDS has until Monday the 19th the right to go to the next instance to request a review of this judge’s ruling, which is why they decided to ask this authority not to make use of that right and to conclude it now this fight.

At 10:15 a.m. and to the rhythm of the batucada, around 30 people blocked 64th Street between 53rd and 49th Street, in front of the secretariat. There they raised the flag of the Mayan people and blankets with slogans.

In front of the entrance to this facility, they displayed a long, wide yellow ribbon with the legend: “Closed.”

In front of the building, a document titled “Respect the results of the consultation, demands Homún before the protection of the federal judge” was read.

In it, they highlight that the judge’s resolution cancels the authorization of the megafarm and orders prior consultation with the Mayan people of Homún and that they rejected the farm. They also tell the history of this fight, since Eduardo Batllori Sampedro was Secretary of Urban Development and Environment in the government of Rolando Zapata Bello and now Mauricio Vila Dosal, who as governor litigates in favor of the company, until reaching this resolution. of the Second Federal Judge who finally ruled in favor of the people.
