The City Council of Mérida promotes a low-cost sterilization campaign for dogs and cats, reaffirming its commitment to caring for companion animals and preventing infectious diseases between animals and humans.
The municipal president, Alejandro Ruz Castro, said these actions aim to control the birth rate of domestic animals to reduce abandonment and promote responsible pet ownership.
Last year, thanks to the collaboration of citizens and associations such as Planned Pethood and Boxitos AC, around one thousand sterilizations were achieved in the municipality of Merida.
The director of the Sustainable Development Unit, Alejandra Bolio Rojas, explained that this year’s sessions began in the Emiliano Zapata Sur II neighborhood and that they will soon be held in different locations, with the first session scheduled for March 17 at the Municipal Veterinary Clinic.
Sterilizations are free for residents of Mérida’s “Comisarías“
The campaigns will have a recovery cost of 100 pesos for residents of Mérida, while in rural communities, these will be free. In addition, sessions have been established at various locations, such as the Comprehensive Development Centers and various police stations, to reach a greater number of pets.
To register pets for sterilization sessions, prior assessments must be carried out, the dates of which are available on the official website of the Mérida City Council or the social networks of Mérida Sustentable.
It is important to note that animals must meet certain requirements, such as having a complete vaccination and deworming schedule and being in good health. In addition, some exceptions are established for surgery, such as for lactating or pregnant females, animals under medical treatment, and certain specific breeds.
Finally, at the Municipal Animal Care Center (CEMAA), located in the Yucalpetén subdivision, comprehensive care is offered to rescued dogs and cats, and find them a home.
Under the current administration, 272 pets have been adopted, while 13 are still waiting to be adopted. Those interested can visit the UDS social networks or go directly to CEMAA from Monday to Friday.
