A delegation of timber businessmen and industrialists in the sector will travel to Guatemala next month in search of new markets for their products.
“The trip is organized by the Mérida City Council, it will be a spearhead towards better business opportunities for both sides to sell and supply”, said Edgardo Martínez Duarte, president of the Chamber of the Wood Industry in Yucatán.
“In the first instance we would seek contact with businessmen, to know what they need and we can offer our products,” he added.
“This way we could build our relationship, which today is almost non-existent, it is just sporadic.”
The manager pointed out that there is no commercial effort in that area, so the trip would be a significant effort to boost the timber industry of our state.
Edgardo Martínez Duarte, president of the National Chamber of the Wood Industry in Yucatán, said that the trip to Guatemala will tentatively take place from March 11 to 13, dates yet to be confirmed.
“This is a great opportunity for all of us who are in the wood sector, making international contacts, even if it is a neighbor like Guatemala, is not always easy. No to mention that Guatemala is a great supplier of wood,” he commented.
Interviewed within the framework of the “Meeting of professionals in the furniture sector” that took place in this city, Martínez Duarte specified that members of the Mexican Association of Suppliers of the Wood and Furniture Industry (Ampimm) are also invited, we´re talking about more than 20 businessmen.
“The trip is organized by the Mérida City Council and we are invited because we are a sector that can not only sell, but Guatemala is a country that has done things well in terms of reforestation, they have many sustainable hectares of pine and other timber products, “That for us are important inputs, hence our greatest interest in participating in this delegation,” he stated.
There are good opportunities on both sides, especially to sell and to be able to supply here, especially when it is a highly industrialized region in Central America and the connection is worth it, he indicated.
Martínez Duarte said that here there is “a lot of demand for wood, but there is no shortage because Oaxaca could completely supply the country with its forest capacity, but unfortunately, illegal logging in some states has become a big problem. Although we have large tracts of land, we do not necessarily use them as we should,” the president of the Chamber of the Wood Industry in Yucatán concluded.
