President López Obrador will preside over the opening of the cultural venue in the archaeological zone.
On Wednesday, February 28th, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will inaugurate the Great Museum of Chichén Itzá, which will have more than 800 archaeological pieces of the Mayan culture. The site is part of the projects that have been carried out along the Mayan train tracks to promote tourism in the region.
“On Wednesday (February 28) we are going to inaugurate the Chichén Itzá Museum. But we are going to make the journey from Palenque by train to Cancún, getting off in Chichén,” López Obrador anticipated in his morning conference last Friday, Feb. 16th.
According to the presidential agenda, the inauguration of the Chichén Itzá museum is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Since Saturday, Feb. 17th, the transfer of large archaeological pieces to the pre-Columbian Mayan city began. For this operation, the archaeological site was temporarily closed and, the street stalls of artisans and vendors were partially dismantled.
Among the relevant vestiges that the Great Museum of Chichén Itzá will house are the two snake heads carved in stone that were located south of El Osario.
According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the new facility is contemplated to be “of the first museums in terms of its collections and museography, and will contribute to the knowledge and enjoyment of this ancient Mayan city.”
