The high tide caused the sea to enter the tourist area of the boardwalk and along the western beach, eastern area of the port, and Chicxulub.
The collapse of illuminated signs, billboards, and cables was also recorded, in addition to a prolonged blackout in the city’s western area and the Yucalpetén Industrial Park.
All of these were the effects of the strong north that hit the coasts of Yucatan on Monday, February 5th, with winds that in the afternoon reached gusts of 60 to 70 kilometers, and intensified during the night.
The ports have been closed to navigation in general since midnight on Sunday, February 4th, so no pleasure boats went out to sail despite the long weekend of the anniversary of the Constitution.

Cold front 32 in Yucatan
Cold front 32 hit the coasts of Yucatan with the dreaded Chikin Ic (bad wind), its effects began to be felt at 6 in the morning, and it dawned with a drop in temperature and winds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour that intensified over the day until reaching speeds of 70 kilometers per hour.
The reports from the Regional Port Captaincy, which on Sunday at midnight ordered the total closure of the ports, are that the north of the cold front 32 will reach gusts of 90 kilometers per hour, hence the recommendations for navigation and population in general, since the winds would cause damage to installations such as advertisements, billboards, electricity, and telephone cables.
Due to the effects of the Chikin Ic, a wind that causes rising seawater, at 1:30 p.m. the sea began to enter the beach area of the traditional boardwalk, two hours later it had already advanced about 50 meters in various parts of that tourist area, but it did not represent a danger to the civilian population.

Chikin ic ate the beach in Progreso
The winds and waves intensified, the sea hit the foundations of numerous summer properties, as expected the chikin ic “ate” the beach and put at risk numerous riverside boats docked to the east of the seawall.
As the afternoon fell, the winds, swells and effects of the chikin ic increased, the growing sea was along the coast. The strong gusts of the cold front knocked out low and high voltage cables in several parts of the city, the industrial area of Yucalpeten was left without electricity for several hours, as well as fuel stations, convenience stores and numerous homes on the west side of the port.
The bad weather will persist during Tuesday, February 6th, the ports remain closed to navigation, and all fishing activities are paralyzed in Progreso.
