By Thursday, February 22, the forest fire that consumed hundreds of hectares of the Dzilam de Bravo ecological reserve, Yucatán, was finally extinguished. The fire is now under control thanks to the intervention of a helicopter from the Mexican Navy Secretariat (Semar).

According to the report released by the members of the Thirteenth Naval Zone, the fire would have consumed an area equivalent to approximately 43 square kilometers (10,600 acres), in an area located in the northeast of the state. It should be noted that so far nothing has been reported regarding its origin.

Semar, through the Mexican Navy, announced that the personnel of the Thirteenth Naval Zone in coordination with the Secretariat of Civil Protection of the state of Yucatán, the National Forestry Commission, the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment, and The municipal authorities of Dzilam de Bravo completed the activities to combat the fire in the Dzilam de Bravo Ecological Reserve on Thursday, February 22.

Personnel from all the diferent agencies collaborated to combat the flames. It should be noted that the Navy members used an MI-17 helicopter with a capacity of 2,500 liters, which poured 16 discharges with a total of 40,000 liters of water, managing to mitigate the fire in the critical areas of the fire.

The Secretary of the Navy later reported that an overflight was carried out over the affected area to verify that the fire had been completely extinguished.

The Dzilam de Bravo ecological reserve is a natural protected area because it is considered the “cradle” of jaguars in Yucatan, in addition to its great diversity of animals and flora.
