Employees of stores and other businesses must be more careful when receiving bills and review them thoroughly to avoid being victims of counterfeiters, said Levy Abraham Macari, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Services of Mérida, referring to the recent case in that a business in Ticul was affected by receiving counterfeit bills in payment.

The leader said that within the chamber council, the areas that have had incidents with counterfeit bills are, among others, department stores, gas stations, parking lots, self-service stores, and clinical laboratories.

“In all cases, they have been sporadically and with 200 and 500 peso bills,” he indicated. This week Ticul merchants were victims of crime since in their business they were paid with fake bills.

These events occurred in the center when two people went into a bale clothing store to buy.

The alleged criminals began to choose t-shirts and shorts in the store and at the end of the purchase the two people approached the cash register and paid with the counterfeit bills.

After paying, the two people left, but shortly after, the store employees realized that the $500 bills with which they were paid were fake.

“There are ways to detect these counterfeit bills, including the use of a special pen and also UV machines. In all the cases that occurred among the members, due to the omission of the employees, the banknotes were not checked and they realized it when they went to the bank to deposit,” explained Abraham Macari.

The president of the organized merchants pointed out that in none of the previous cases did the affected businesses file a complaint with the authorities since they did not know which of the clients made the payment with the counterfeit bills.

The importance of those employees who receive payments in cash to take the time and care to review the bills they receive or subject them to the use of UV rays or special pens was insisted on.

The Bank of Mexico explains that when reviewing the banknotes, their security measures must be verified, such as the element that changes color, linear backgrounds, fluorescence, micromagnetic and 3D thread, relief printing, watermark, perfect registration, figures that change color, micro-printed text and transparent window.
