The number of containers sent from China to Mexico reached 881 thousand in the first three quarters of 2023.
China is sending more goods to the United States through Mexico to avoid high tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, according to an analysis of trade data published in the Financial Times.

“The increase came as Mexico overtook China as the largest exporter of goods to the United States last year, and as cross-border truck shipments into the United States continued to rise rapidly,” the analysis says.
At the beginning of January it was reported that for the first time in 20 years, the United States imported more goods and services from Mexico than from China, according to published official data that indicates that the US deficit in its foreign trade in goods and services closed 2023 with a 18.7% drop.
The pandemic and the trade tensions between the two in recent years, which President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are currently trying to leave behind, are beginning to be reflected in the trade balance between both countries.
Figures from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) indicate that the deficit with China decreased by $102.9 billion to $279.4 billion in 2023.
