The Mexico City Animal Surveillance Brigade rescued a Guatemalan Quetzal, an endangered species, that was trapped in a nine-meter-high tree in the Cuauhtémoc district.
Neighbors of said mayor’s office reported to the capital police about the presence of a bird with exuberant plumage that was trapped between the branches of a tree in the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood.
Agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security notified the specialized brigade after corroborating the presence of the bird.
The brigade members arrived at the site and using rappelling techniques with ropes, managed to reach the trapped bird using a net.
The Quetzal was transferred in a special container to the facilities of the Animal Surveillance Brigade in the Xochimilco mayor’s office to receive veterinary care. The Guatemalan Quetzal is a bird, now in danger of extinction, that lives in southern Mexico and Central America, mainly in tropical and cloud forests. An adult specimen can reach up to 65 centimeters in length and is characterized by its green plumage and long tail.
