The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, openly admitted that during the leadership of Minister Arturo Zaldívar in the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), his administration exercised influence in cases that it considered relevant to its political interests.
During his morning conference at the National Palace on Wednesday, February 21st, the federal President openly admitted that “he spoke” with Zaldivar because, unlike Minister Norma Piña (the current President of Mexico’s Supreme Court of Justice, Arturo Zaldívar always did “help him.”

Obrador even said that had he remained at the head of the Judiciary, Zaldívar would not have allowed decisions such as the conditional release of Emilio Lozoya or the unfreezing of the accounts of Genaro García Luna’s wife.
AMLO also attacked the current president of the Court, Minister Norma Piña, whom he accused of giving judges “a license to steal” with her speech in defense of the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice autonomy.

Arturo Zaldívar was president of the Supreme Court from January 2, 2019 to December 31, 2022.
In November of last year, Zaldívar resigned from his position to join the campaign team of Morena’s presidential candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum.
