Activists demand justice for Rufo, a fair sentence for his attacker

Animal rescuers from Yucatán demonstrated yesterday at the Monument to the Homeland for the death of the dog Rufo, which occurred in the Chuburná neighborhood in 2023.

The aggressor, the owner of the canine, is Julio N. and he is in prison for animal cruelty. The activists indicated that the dog was hanged, and beaten, its viscera burst and decapitated. It was a brutal death, they lamented. The dog’s remains are guarded by the authorities until this case comes to an end.

The rescuers want the aggressor to serve many years in prison, they do not want him to do community work, nor deliver croquettes, but rather to pay in prison.

Where are the laws, we don’t want more Rufos, said Elsa Arceo in this demonstration against animal abuse.

The participants carried banners with an image of Rufo and also wore a black bow to mourn the death of Rufo, Chiquilín, and many felines and canines in Yucatán.

What do we want for Rufo? Justice! they shouted. What do we want for Chiquilín? Justice!, responded the twenty animal activists.

Elsa Arceo explained that February 12 marked six months since the dog Rufo was killed.

In addition, she said that she experienced these events closely since when they were notified they went to the property where the dog was killed. The events occurred on August 12, 2023.

Fifty rescuers were there that day and I even received threats from Julio N.’s brother that he was going to kill me with a sword and an axe, he recalled.

We do not know when he will be released, only that on February 23, at noon, there will be a session of the case in the Oral Trial Chamber. Elsa Arceo explained that the sentence in Yucatán for the crime that Julio N. committed against Rufo is six months to three years and the adjustments to the law are stuck in Congress.
