The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) began the intervention in the monuments of Justo Sierra and Felipe Carrillo Puerto on Paseo de Montejo, vandalized in March 2022.

Anna Goycoolea Artis, director of INAH Yucatán, explained that the institute has been working for a couple of weeks on the preliminaries such as the photogrammetry of both monuments, the generation of diagrams, the graphic record, and the specific state of conservation opinion. The first works focus on the monument to Justo Sierra.

“There is currently scaffolding in Justo Sierra because the photogrammetry was completed there and because a study of the construction system of the monument will be carried out with the support of a laboratory that will extract cores to analyze the construction materials,” explained Anna Goycoolea. “Work is also being done on the opinion of the bronze sculpture by specialists,” he indicated.

The official said that due to its dimensions and characteristics, the monument to Carrillo Puerto requires a more specialized scaffolding structure.

“In Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the scaffolding is about to be placed, since a special system is required due to the dimensions and height of the monument. In the coming weeks, the cleaning and restoration of that monument will begin,” he said.

When referring to a possible attack against the monuments during future demonstrations such as the one on March 8, the director explained that the INAH does not rule out taking security measures to protect the structures, but will also study with the authorities some device or strategy to protect them. the monuments.

“As for the plan for March 8, we are evaluating the conservation options to protect the monument, perhaps by covering it or applying a layer of temporary protection, but a joint strategy must be worked out with the city council and state government so that the actions of protection are not only direct on the monuments,” he said. Anna Goycoolea explained that it would be somewhat risky to set a deadline for the completion of the work since these are very careful and detailed works that must be tackled at the pace of the specialists in charge of them.
