Mérida celebrates 59 years of the Yucatecan Serenade in Santa Lucía

Within the framework of the celebration of the 59 years of the Yucatecan Serenade in the Santa Lucía park, Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro highlighted the musical soul and talent of Yucatecan composers and troubadours, whose art has transcended to reach many corners of the world.

“Yucatecan music transcends any barrier and time. And our trova is the flag that identifies us beyond our borders,” the mayor expressed.

He pointed out that Mérida is recognized as a place of peace and culture, with an important historical and gastronomic legacy, with tourist and colonial attractions, but also and very importantly for its music: “culture, gastronomy and music are the three pillars that “give us identity and a greater sense of belonging to the city.”

“That is the reason why the serenades of Santa Lucía Park are more than half a century old, because both Yucatecans and visitors have appropriated them, they are part of the cultural daily life that distinguishes us in the eyes of everyone,” the mayor continued.

Likewise, within the framework of this celebration, the Municipal President awarded the “Guty Cárdenas” medal to the composer and guitarist Roberto Cárdenas Bernardi, for having taken his compositions and his concern for music not only to other places in the country, but also to Europe, and Africa.

“We have the ideal setting, which is the celebrations of our Mérida for its 482 years, to deliver this recognition, a simple tribute to those who with their inspiration and talent have taken the good name of our city to so many places in the world,” he said.

Ruz Castro declared that Cárdenas Bernardi has stood out within the Yucatecan trova not only because of his love for music, but because he reflects it in his compositions, in the founding of new singing groups, by working alongside national and international artists.
