With 54 surgical interventions during 2023, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Yucatán, broke a historical record for kidney transplants in the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) in Mérida, said Dr. Jorge Martínez Ulloa, head of Clinical Department of the UMAE Unit.

The specialist revealed that this figure reached its historical maximum, hand in hand with a great effort by citizens to continue strengthening the culture of donation, accompanied by strategies to prevent and care for everyone’s health.

“Transplants are medical and clinical procedures that consist of transferring organs, tissues or cells from one person (donor) to another (recipient), with the aim of improving the quality of life of the patient or the possibility of giving them an opportunity to continue living; For this reason, this decision is transcendental and will help give a new opportunity to live to those who need a kidney transplant,” said Martínez Ulloa.

Likewise, he commented that the patients who usually require a donation and transplant are those who experienced organ failure due to an accident or who suffered damage to some tissue, due to infection, tumors, cirrhosis, liver dysfunction, or due to cardiac pathologies that are irreversible after treatment.

“The organs that are transplanted at the institute are kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, as well as tissues such as corneas and heart valves,” he indicated, which is why he urged people to continue contributing with an altruistic donation, since not only in Yucatán but throughout the country there is a great need, especially for kidneys, livers, hearts, and corneas. “It is important to emphasize that anyone living or dead, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity or religion, can be a donor candidate,” he concluded.
