Several fishermen from the La Caleta river dock, located in the southeast of this city, publicly asked federal, state and municipal authorities to reinforce surveillance in this fishing refuge because, they said, they work there daily with a lack of public security.

Some even said that they are so fed up with insecurity that they are already thinking of carrying weapons to defend themselves in case criminals attack them when they work in this fishing refuge or at sea.

Violent episode in the port of Progreso

After witnessing the brutal attack on the fisherman “El Gemelo”, who the day before yesterday at this berth was chased to the boat “El Camarón” and injured by a gang of five men and a woman armed with machetes and knives, several riverside residents agreed to be interviewed, but they asked not to be identified for fear of being victims of reprisals.

Those interviewed assured that, precisely, security is what the authorities need to reinforce in this riverside dock.

Day by day, they agreed, they feel quite insecure, because they are constantly victims of theft of tools, batteries, motors and other items that frequently “disappear.”

They said that they attribute these thefts to foreign people who recently came to live in the port to work in fishing, since, they stated, “those of us who were born or have lived in this city for some time already know each other.”

They added that they are also concerned about assaults committed at sea, since they do not know when any of them can become a victim of armed pirates who steal boat engines.

Furthermore, they indicated, with the beginning of the grouper ban (which will be from February 1 to March 31), thefts and assaults may increase.

For this reason, they expressed, we ask the authorities, both land and sea, to increase surveillance and protection for us, the fishermen.

They assured that they have already made this request several times, but unfortunately neither the Secretary of the Navy nor the Municipal Police nor the state Secretary of Public Security (SS) increase surveillance, permanently, on this dock.

“They tell you yes, that they are going to watch, that they are going to help you, and yes it is true, one or two weeks you suddenly see more patrols, but then they disappear and that is when the ‘bad guys’ start doing their thing again. “said a fisherman who saw the savage attack on “El Gemelo.”

“The truth is, I think most of us are already tired. I’m thinking about bringing my machete with me, I have it in my house, under my window (and) sharpened by anything, but I think I need it more here, because you don’t know if being at sea or here they’re going to come to you. scrub,” concluded the interviewee.
