The archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá, in Yucatán, has established itself as the most visited cultural tourist spot in 2023 on the Peninsula, both by national and international travelers, as announced by the head of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). ), Diego Prieto, during the daily morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“The increase has been notable in all the archaeological zones of the country, but more so in the Southeast and those closest to the routes where the Maya Train passes, which are within the Promeza recovery program”, Prieto said.
Visitors to Chichen Itza
One of the most important Maya archaeological sites in Yucatán is the city of Chichén Itzá, as it had an increase in tourists in 2023 of 17% compared to 2022 and in Uxmal of 20%. Only in Chichén Itzá last year there were visits of 2 million 330 thousand national and foreign tourists.
In one of the Seven Wonders of the World, during the first days of January the record of attendees was surpassed in just one day, as on Tuesday, January 23, without being the Spring equinox, 7,500 people arrived at the archaeological zone.
