The most recent statistics available from the Ministry of Health (as of December 16, 2023) reveal that in Yucatán there are 204 confirmed cases of infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), of which 121 are women, and 83 are men.

The figure exceeds by 71.43% the 119 infections that occurred in the same period in 2022.

Given this panorama, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Yucatán continues with the campaign to mitigate the delay in vaccination schedules against HPV in all its Family Medicine Units (UMF) until January 31, 2024. The vaccination campaign is aimed at girls between 11 and 15 years old.

Dr. Mirna López Gutiérrez, Assistant Medical Coordinator in Public Health, explained that these doses reduce the incidence of HPV infection, a virus that could cause various types of cancer, such as cervical cancer. Therefore, age (between 11 and 15 years) is decisive in the application of doses, since the immune response of minors is faster, the benefit is greater and its effectiveness increases between 96 and 100%.

The Social Security specialist invited mothers and fathers, as well as the guardians of girls between 11 and 15 years old, to take them to the UMF and be vaccinated against HPV.

The IMSS indicated that the biological against HPV is also intended for cisgender and transgender women, ages 11 to 49, who live with HIV.

Dr. Mirna López explained that in some cases it is possible that pain and inflammation may occur at the site of application of the vaccine, being the most frequent secondary reactions.

He reiterated that this campaign is aimed at girls aged 11 to 15 who are not in school, who are in fifth and sixth grade of primary school, first, second and third of secondary school, as well as cisgender and transgender women aged 11 to 49, who live with HIV. The application hours at the IMSS UMF are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday.

“It is very important that girls and adolescents who come to receive their dose against HPV have not received a dose of this vaccine in previous years. Likewise, it is essential to request information from Health personnel; since they should not be vaccinated if they have a history of severe allergy to any of the components of the vaccine and when there is a fever equal to or greater than 38.5 degrees,” the specialist noted.
