The business sector of Yucatán fought for work to begin this month to expand the capacity of the Progreso Deep Sea port, which will increase the competitive advantage of our state.
According to the president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of Yucatán, Alejandro Guerrero Lozano, the intention of the state government was for the works to begin on December, although, due to different procedures that have not yet been completed, the project did not start until January.
«The plan was for it to start in December but, we understand that the issue of legal documents is what is delaying us, the signatures, and the contracts. We hope to start at the beginning of 2024, in January, we will be fine,” he said.
The expansion of the Progreso port consists of carrying out construction dredging of 5 million cubic meters to increase the capacity of the port’s navigation areas, which would increase from 20 to 40 hectares.
Works would take up to 9 months
The navigation channel would go from 150 to 180 meters wide and from 8 to 10 km in length, increasing the depth to 14 meters, among other tasks.
Guerrero Lozano said that the work would take about 9 months to be completed and later, the infrastructure would be installed, for which the State Government obtained a loan for the project.
«The loan of more than 3 billion pesos has already been received, it was requested for these purposes and, well, we are very attentive, we are pushing for these works to start asap because this is going to be a trigger for the state’s economy. We are putting pressure on it and following up on it, seeing how we can support this to be done because, in the long run, it is something that we are going to have as a benefit in the next 20, 25 years,” said the businessman.
The Secretariat of Economic Development of Yucatán (Sefoet) hopes that, once the federal permit is granted, a tender of a month and a half will be held for the work, since there are only three companies worldwide that can carry out this type of work.
