300 tons of lobster have been caught so far this season in Yucatán

The president of the Federation of Fishing Cooperative Societies of the Western Center of the State, Mariano Canul Uicab declared that 550 tons of lobster have been captured, from July 1, 2023, to the current month of January 2024; The crustacean entered a closed season starting next March 1st.

He pointed out that there is lobster, but unfortunately, the price is still low at 450 to 500 pesos per kilo, in addition to the fact that Europe, China, Japan, and the United States are not buying the crustacean that is caught in Yucatecan waters.

He said that the lobster capture season begins on July 1 and ends on February 28, 550 tons have already been reached, and they may reach more than 700 tons; This fishery is going very well for 1,500 lobster fishermen from the west and east of the entity.

He insisted that unfortunately, the price does not help, since the boats spend a lot of money to go after the species, in addition to the fact that it is a risk because the capture is through diving, with the risk that the diver suffers some decompensation and that It can cost your life.

He pointed out that years ago, Yucatán exported lobster to Europe, the United States, China, and Japan; but since last year, those markets have been closed for export, perhaps due to the international economic situation that affects the entire world, while the food is sold to the national market, to the Riviera Maya of Quintana Roo, but unfortunately the price is low and is not profitable for lobstermen.
