Meteorologists predict “pleasant” weather in Yucatán on Christmas Day

This weekend there will be pleasant holiday weather in the Yucatan Peninsula, even during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when it is expected to be hot during the day and cool at night.

However, after the Christmas period, conditions could change due to the arrival of cold fronts, which could return low temperatures to the region for the end-of-year holidays.

According to meteorologist Juan Antonio Palma Solís, coordinator of Meteored, the forecasts indicate that for this Saturday the 23rd, Sunday the 24th, and Monday the 25th of December there will be light rains (less than 5 mm) in the northeast and east of Yucatán, coast of Quintana Roo, south of Campeche and west of Tabasco.

In addition, maximum temperatures of 79 to 88°F are expected in the Yucatan Peninsula and 79 to 83°F in Tabasco, as well as winds from the East-Southeast and Southeast of 9 to 15 km/h, with stronger gusts in areas coastal, and minimum temperatures of 61 to 76°F.

However, on Tuesday the 26th a new frontal system will move towards the central part of the Gulf of Mexico.

The system will induce a trough over the region that could leave strong punctual storms (25 to 50 mm) in the center south of Yucatán and north of Campeche. Due to its possible incidence, the meteorologist explains in his report, it was decided to assign it the name “Ook” (mango, in Mayan language).

“Ook” will move slowly over central and southern Veracruz on Wednesday, so the stormy effects of its prefrontal trough will continue over the region.

Specifically in eastern Yucatán, eastern Campeche, and central, northern Quintana Roo, where strong occasional storms (25 to 50 mm) could occur, accompanied by electrical activity.

During the night of Wednesday “Ook” will move more quickly towards the Yucatan Peninsula and the continental polar air mass associated with this winter phenomenon will promote a moderate “north” event of 20 to 50 km/h.

The phenomenon will generate a new cooling of the environment that will be more noticeable at dawn on Thursday and Friday.

In this sense, it is estimated that the minimum temperature values will decrease to the range of 50 to 59°F in some areas of southern Yucatán, eastern Campeche, and central/western Quintana Roo.

“And what will happen in the last days of the year? So far our meteorological analysis indicates that the cool conditions favored by ‘Ook’ will persist until Saturday and will even be reinforced by the arrival of an arctic air mass or a new cold front,” he adds. “The cold climate could favor the intensification of the regional climate, since, preliminarily, it is estimated that the mercury column could decrease to values below 50°C by the beginning of 2024,” he concludes.
