Low temperatures result in economic loss for horticulturists in Yucatán

The president of the Association of Horticulturists of Yucatán, José Filomeno Tejero Poot stated that the low temperatures that cause “frosts” affect the harvest of horticultural foods since the crops dry out and they have to be planted again.

He explained that this causes economic losses to horticultural producers since, lacking public resources to support the field, it is difficult for them to replant after losing their crops due to low temperatures, intense heat, and severe droughts.

He reiterated that 2023 was a very difficult year for horticulturists since their crops were affected in the months of intense heat and also due to the prolonged drought that occurred this year in Yucatán, an event of this magnitude hasn’t been seen in many years.

He clarified that they had problems harvesting horticultural products; Therefore, the little that could be harvested such as radish, cilantro, epazote, mint, pumpkin, tomato, and cucumber had a very high price in the markets throughout the State because the producer had to recover investment to be able to replant and harvest.

Finally, Tejero Poot stressed that what most affects producers are the low temperatures, the “frosts” are felt stronger in the municipalities across the state and that affects the crops of horticultural products because the product before ripening to be harvested dries and burns due to the intense cold.
