Personnel from the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) have detected and controlled more than 30 pockets of Central American lobster in five municipalities of Yucatán.

The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development informed “El Universal” that since last November 6 to date the Acrididae have appeared on 186 hectares, on lands in Buctzotz, Cenotillo, Dzilam González, Espita, and Cacalchén, without being identified yet the damage caused to the region’s crops.

In Mérida and surrounding towns, only the crossing of lobster swarms has been observed, which are monitored by technicians to locate their resting place and apply control actions outside the city, to avoid inconvenience to the population.

Yucatán is one of the areas that has ideal conditions for the reproduction of the insect, with more than 520 thousand susceptible hectares. For this reason, technicians apply control measures via land, and permanent exploration actions are established to detect any new re-entry of insects.

So far this year, in the entity, phytosanitary technicians have explored 127,620 hectares in search of the pest to determine the density of the population and applied control measures in 2,109 hectares, for which they use environmentally friendly inputs, the environment and human health.
