The Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatán, Palacio Cantón, is pleased to invite the community to visit the temporary exhibition “The Book of Books. “The X’tabay”. The inauguration took place on December 14. The exhibition is the result of the collaboration between Tirso González Araiza, author of the book, and Juana Alicia, creator of the magnificent illustrations that accompany the text.The literary graphic proposal presents extracts from a book printed in silkscreen and bound by hand. Accompanied by original plates with the sgraffito technique, sketches for the illustrations, large-format digital prints and screen prints on paper, the exhibition offers an immersion in the fascinating history of the X’tabay.

The project is inspired by the legend of the X’tabay, a narrative rooted in the oral tradition of Oxkutzcab, in the southern region of Yucatán. Although it is not the most famous legend, the X’tabay is still present in the collective memory, captivating the imagination with its mystery.

The beautiful woman with Mayan features who appears to men near the ceiba trees and attracts them with her charms, and then ends their lives.The exhibition offers a unique look at the creative process, showcasing the joint work of González Araiza and Juana Alicia. Visitors will be able to explore the sketches, sgraffito techniques and digital prints that brought this reinterpretation of the legend to life.

The invitation is open to attend the activities and to visit the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatán Palacio Cantón located at Paseo de Montejo 485 entrance on 43, Historic Center of Mérida, Yucatán from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., being the last access at 4:30 p.m.General entrance fee $90 Mexican pesos as of December 31, 2023.Sundays free entry for residents of Mexico.
