A fisherman, barely 20 years old, lost his life in Huatabampo, Sonora after a shark attack on the beaches of the port of Yavaros. The State Coordination of Civil Protection of Sonora confirmed the death that occurred on Friday, December 29.

The man was identified as Víctor Alejandro “N”, 22 years old, originally from the town of Moroncarit. According to the report, the altercation occurred when Víctor Alejandro was carrying out his crustacean fishing activities via diving.

At 1 p.m., a four-meter great white shark attacked the young man, detaching parts of his body.

“He was an unlicensed fisherman and did not have an anti-shark repellent bracelet,” Sonora Civil Protection reported about the incident on Tojahui beach.

Local media indicated that the young man’s fishing companions put him on the boat after the animal attack and implemented rescue maneuvers while they took him to the dock, but they could not save his life.

It was reported that the young fisherman had lost one of his lower limbs due to the shark’s bite, which caused him to bleed to death.

Agents of the Huatabampo Red Cross arrived at the El Tojahui fishing camp but could do nothing to save his life.

Experts from the Sonora Attorney General’s Office came to take samples and begin default investigations. “Civil Protection, together with municipal authorities, has insisted on calling on fishermen to coordinate with the fishing authorities to be duly registered and have the necessary preventive measures to carry out their activities,” the agency indicated.
